A passion for sustainability is present at all levels of our organization. Read a message from our President and CEO, Charlie Alutto, who outlines how our environmental and social commitment is a philosophy that guides everything we do at Stericycle.
Our commitment to sustainability stems from a constant focus on providing solutions that protect people and brands, promote health, and safeguard the environment. More specifically, Stericycle is committed to sustainable growth by:
For leading organizations today, a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility is a business necessity. Stericycle is proud to serve a wide variety of industries and customers with solutions that help protect the environment and maintain regulatory compliance.
Protecting Canada from Harmful Wastes
Stericycle Canada is the only nationally regulated medical waste company that provides a 100% Canadian solution for the destruction of regulated medical and pharmaceutical waste. In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), our destruction process is the only locally-based, zero waste to landfill solution. All of the non-anatomical biomedical waste generated by our customers in the GTA is used to generate electricity for the GTA.
Across Canada on an annual basis, Stericycle handles more than 20 million kilograms of medical waste, ensuring it is disposed of efficiently and responsibly to protect the public from infectious material. This enables health providers to continue to innovate and deliver their life-saving services while expanding the access of healthcare services. Beyond proper treatment, our Stericycle Sharps Management Service featuring our BioSystems reusable containers offer a sustainable solution to needle and sharps disposal. One reusable container replaces 600 disposable sharps containers.
Sustainability Solutions for Unsalable or Expired Goods Management
Beyond medical waste, Stericycle Environmental Solutions provides customers a wide range of sustainability services, which brings environmentally responsible practices to diverse needs such as product destruction and recalls and recycling programs. Stericycle’s experienced team and history of results, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure, help customers manage the processing of any item, including expired goods and off-specification products. In addition to providing comprehensive process management and accounting, our unique approach to sustainability conserves as much energy, materials, and resources as possible during processing and destruction. Our Sustainability Services team ensures that items are processed using methods that comply with all standards and regulations while achieving corporate sustainability goals.
Return/Recall Service Support
A product recall or return is normally a high stress and time sensitive events but that does not mean that sustainability and environmental considerations should not apply. Our specific suite of services enhance the sustainability of each step in the recall process with a focus on conserving energy and achieving measureable, net-positive sustainable results at reasonable costs. From transportation to disassembly, segregation, storage, recycling/destruction, and disposal, customers receive guidance on how to most efficiently and effectively minimize their environmental impact and meet sustainability goals.
Stericycle will manage through the urgent, critical nature or recall event to ensure no environmental penalties for any number of regulatory violations will result. These penalties can have more than just an immediate financial impact—they can also dramatically interrupt business operations or impact brand image. Our experience and unmatched knowledge of environmental regulations and regulatory agencies ensures our clients avoid costly fines.
Minimizing Our Footprint
Beyond the services we provide our customers, we recognize the importance of minimizing the direct impact our own operations have on the environment and communities. While, by law, a small portion of the medical wastes we handle must be incinerated, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce the impact of this disposal method or seek opportunities for electric cogeneration when incineration is used.
To reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, Stericycle leverages sophisticated transportation logistics and telemetry technology. The impact of such technology in Canada and the U.S. has resulted in a significant reduction in the total number of miles driven. In 2014, our fleet traveled 2.5 million fewer miles in Canada and the United States.
Reduce, Recycling, Recovery, Reuse Programs, and Waste Minimization
Continuous improvement opportunities to minimize environmental impact, conserve energy, and add efficiencies can always be found, even when managing highly-regulated hazardous material. When managing materials on behalf of our customers, Stericycle seeks solutions that fully comply with regulations while meeting sustainability goals. Examples include:
